When it comes to credit cards we knew how to make the most of them. We spent like people who would never be able to spend again and now we are looking for credit card debt solutions to try to manage the overwhelming debt we find ourselves with.

The first thing to learn about credit card debt solutions is this. Stop spending on your credit card. The can be no financial solution to your credit card debt problem while you keep spending more than you repay. The cost of the interest on anything you purchase with a credit card makes all the things you buy expensive.

If you purchase anything at all with a credit card and do not repay the full cost when the bill becomes due you will pay interest on the debt. The longer you keep an unpaid credit card balance the more interest will be charged.

To understand any solution to credit card debt you must understand credit cards and how they work and what they are good for. Credit cards operate on the basis that they lend you the money and enable you to purchase goods on credit. The money they lend you is paid directly to the retailer you are buying from.

Once you made the purchase the debt is added to your current balance on your credit card account and interest will be added. Unless you pay off the credit card in full when you get the bill, more interest will be added next month and the month after and the month after that. All that interest starts to add up to a significant sum of money before too long. The result is that all your purchases are costing you more than the price you paid at the store. Using credit cards to fund your lifestyle is an expensive way to live. Paying cash works out much cheaper.

The benefits of credit cards are for using them for short term credit. This is the reason credit cards were invented. If you are short of cash this month and the car needs servicing credit cards enable you to buy now and pay next month or over a few months. Instant credit like this was not available years ago and it made life difficult for people who had a sudden bill to pay or needed to purchase something straight away. Where we went wrong and the reason we are left seeking credit card debt solutions is because we went to far with the idea of getting things straight away and paying for them later.

So, you can see that credit cards cost you more money than paying cash. The debts you build up make life more difficult because the credit card repayments mean you have less money available to spend each month. Understanding these disadvantages of using credit cards too much will help you be more resolved to keep your debts under control in the future.

What about the credit card debt solutions? What can be done about the overwhelming debts we are having to cope with? There are several different strategies for dealing with credit card debts and which suits you best will depend on your individual financial circumstances.

Before I offer my personal thoughts on dealing with your credit card debt I must point out that you should take advice from a qualified financial advisor before doing anything you might come to regret later on.

If you have enough money in savings then paying off the credit card debts with your savings can sometimes make a lot of sense. The credit card bills will be charging you a lot of interest every year and you are probably getting much less interest on your savings. If you pay off your debt with savings use the money you would have paid in repayments and pay it into your savings account to rebuild your savings. When you work out the numbers this can give you a great return on your savings because you are effectively earning as much as you were paying in interest to the credit card company.

If you have a reasonable credit score you should be able to take out a debt consolidation loan to repay credit card debt. You take out a fixed term loan at a lower rate of interest and pay off the credit cards with the loan money. Your consolidation loan will usually be for a regular amount each month which should be considerab;y lower than you were having to repay to the credit card companies. Use the spare money wisely and avoid the temptation to start using your credit cards again once they have been paid off.

One other option for credit card debt solutions is that you can make a concerted effort to repay your credit card debt. Rather than repay the minimum which makes the debt last for years and years, you make minimum payments on your lowest interest credit cards and pay as much as you can afford on the most expensive credit card you have. Continue paying as much as you can on this card each month until you pay it off and then use the money you were paying towards that card to add to the minimum payment you were making on the next most expensive credit card.

You will find you are paying off your credit card debts quite slowly at first but with every month the proportion that you repay increases. Within a few months you will find you have made a big dent in your debts and within a few years you could eliminate credit card debt and have all your credit card debts paid off.
